Offboarding

Throughout your time in the lab

It might seem strange to already be thinking about leaving the lab at the beginning of your time here, but there are several things that you can do to ensure that your work is not lost when you transition to a new position:

  • Use a GitHub account linked to your personal email so that you do not lose access to your repositories when you leave
  • Do all of your main work inside of the shared lab folders (Projects, Publications, Presentations)
  • Contribute to the parent repositories in the Ewald Lab GitHub Organisation relatively option. You should not be opening one giant pull request every few months!
  • Keep your code organised, documented, and lean. It's easy to explore 100 new directions with coding agents; take the time to trim dead ends from the codebase to keep things under control.

Before leaving

About a month before leaving, you should:

  • Discuss what level of access you'll need to EBI resources, and for how long. This will determine what sort of status you are given (e-visitor, unpaid visitor, etc), and Jess needs some time to submit all of the Workday form.
  • Clean up your GitHub repos and ensure that you are able to open pull requests to contribute your recent work to the parent repos shortly before leaving.
  • Move all project files and presentations to the shared Google folders (projects, manuscripts, preesntations) so that the lab can still access them after you leave. Transfer ownership of all files that you've created to Jess.
  • Send Jess a personal email address that you will not lose access to and ask her add you to any Google drive folders that you'll need access to over the coming months.
  • Discuss your last in-person 1:1 meeting and day on campus with Jess so that the lab can arrange a proper good-bye! Add your last day on campus to the Lab Locations calendar.

On your last in-person day:

  • Leave your laptop, mouse, and keyboard in Jess' office
  • Drop your badge off at security
  • Send a Slack message to the Ewald Lab channel with your contact information so that we can stay in touch!

After leaving

First - please stay in touch! We would love to hear about what you've been up to. If there is ever a time where you could use some mentorship, please ask for it. Jess is happy to schedule a Zoom call.
