Aleix is a scientist at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) working on AI-assisted curation with biomedical ontologies. He began his scientific career in the laboratory, researching fruit flies during his PhD at Cardiff University and his postdoctoral work at the University of Birmingham, combining experimental and bioinformatics approaches. He then moved into biocuration and ontology development. As an ontology editor, he organised biological data into structured knowledge frameworks and designed a multi-agent system to curate and edit ontologies. In Dr Jess Ewald’s group, he contributes to a large language model pipeline that maps free-text toxicological effects from the EPA’s Toxicity Value Database (ToxValDB) to biomedical ontologies, producing machine-readable annotations to support hazard assessment and chemical grouping. He is also developing AI agents for the IntAct molecular interaction database to help curate interaction evidence from the scientific literature.
