Tiam earned his BSc and MSc in Theoretical Physics from Sharif University of Technology (SUT), where, jointly supervised by Dr. Mohammad Reza Ejtehadi (SUT) and Dr. Morteza Mahmoudi (Harvard University), he developed a mechanical virtual cell model to predict how cells respond to substrate topography. He then completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia in Dr. Peter Zandstra’s lab, combining theory and experiment to infer and control collective cell behavior in engineered multicellular systems, and developing machine learning methods to infer gene regulatory networks from single-cell data. Tiam is now an EIPOD postdoctoral fellow at EBI, jointly supervised by Dr. Jess Ewald (EBI) and Dr. Sarah Teichmann (University of Cambridge). Working at the intersection of AI, systems biology, and systems immunology, he is developing models to predict, and ultimately control, how the immune system responds to perturbations such as cytokines, toxicants, and other environmental factors.
